Rare Glazed Redware Bottle, Inscribed "William Harrison / April 20th / 1840", American, 1840, ovoid form with footed base and rounded spout, the surface embellished with profuse straight and wavy line incising, covered in reddish-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Underside incised "William Harrison / April 20th / 1840", likely referring to Whig presidential candidate, William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), during the Election of 1840. He defeated incumbent President Martin van Buren, only to die of pnemonia thirty-one-days into his term. A second possibility is that this inscription actually refers to a currently undocumented potter named William Harrison. Excellent condition with a minor spout chip. H 7".
