Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a bird perched on a stump. Brushed cobalt "2" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Appealing wide, ovoid form with desirable Cowden & Wilcox motif. Right handle with a small chip and light wear to one terminal. Left handle with a shallow 3/4" flake to one terminal. A 3" hairline from rim on front. A 2 3/4" hairline from rim on reverse. Two small chips to shoulder molding. A tight X-shaped line on underside, partially visible on underside, part of which extends in a single line 3" onto base of jar below left handle. A tiny glazed-over iron ping to left side of front. A tiny iron ping to interior. A few very minor base chips.
