Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Horse Head Decoration, Stamped "W. HART / OGDENSBURGH", NY State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a horse with bridle and flowing mane above a looping line. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Large rim chips. Wear to inner rim for lid. A faint 3" line from rim on reverse. A chip to top of one handle. Wear to ends of same handle. Minor wear to opposite handle. Very minor exfoliation at base. Two short Y-shaped lines at base on reverse. An approximately 4 1/2" Y-shaped line at base on reverse, continuing onto underside. Some dryness to surface.
