Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Fish Decoration, Stamped "W. HART. / OGDENSBURGH", NY State origin, circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large fish with heavily-scaled body and scissor-shaped tail atop stylized water. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An iconic New York State stoneware design with strong folk appeal, measuring over 10" long around the curve of the jar's front. Exfolation to reverse. Some scattered spots of very light exfoliation to front. A small in-the-firing lime ping below decoration. A faint 1 3/4" Y-shaped surface line to front, not visible on interior. Some additional areas of light to moderate exfoliation to sides, reverse, and top of rim. Some fry to cobalt. One handle reglued. Two cracks from rim on reverse, measuring 6 1/4" and 4 1/2". H 13".
