Three-Gallon Wheeling, WV Stoneware Advertising Jug, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooling to spout and shoulder, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "R.A. McCABE & CO. / WHOLESALE / DRUGGISTS. / WHEELING, / W. VA.", flanked by small stenciled flourishes. Shoulder decorated with a large brushed fuchsia above graduated swags and a wavy line. Base with bold-faced stenciled "3" flanked by flourishes, underscored by a freehand stripe. Upper handle terminal decorated with a cobalt highlight. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some fairly minor firing flaws. A smooth in-the-firing contact mark to front, beside an adhered piece of clay beside the "E" in "McCABE". A small in-the-firing ping to left side of jug at base and are below spout. A salt drip and small in-the-firing surface chip (contact mark) to reverse. A minor, 2" in-the-firing fissure to underside, not visible on underside.
