Scarce Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Stenciled Cobalt Floral Decoration, Vertically-Stenciled "From / James Hamilton & Co. / Greensboro / Pa.", circa 1875, large-sized jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with two large stenciled floral sprays depicting a variety of blossoms and leaves, flanking the vertically-stenciled inscription, "10 / From / James Hamilton & Co / Greensboro, Pa.", above a stenciled flourish. Shoulder area decorated with two freehand stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable size with profuse decoration and highly-unusual vertically-stenciled maker's mark. A large loss to left handle. Otherwise excellent condition. H 19 3/4".
