Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Butter Jar, Inscribed "Butter", Stamped "CLARK & FOX / ATHENS", NY State origin, circa 1835, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with the cobalt-script word, "Butter", underscored by cobalt spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent subject matter and desirable maker. While many examples from this firm are known with inscribed cobalt dates, pieces featuring words are most unusual. Excellent condition with minor chips and nicks to rim, a few minor in-the-firing chips to underside at edge, and a few in-the-firing surface lines to interior, not visible on exterior.
