Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Folky Cobalt Goat Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK JR. / ATHENS," New York State origin, circa 1845, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a horned goat with cobalt-dashed body. Highly unusual design with excellent color. Few figural-decorated examples from this time period or bearing this mark are known. 3 1/4" hairline from rim on left side of front. 8" crack from rim on reverse. A shallow 3/4" chip and two much smaller chips on interior of rim. A small chip on exterior of rim.
