Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. MANTELL / PENN YAN", NY State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a flowering plant bearing two large blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Very nice condition with wear to underside at edge, possibly in the firing, a small base chip on reverse, and a minor nick to inner rim for lid.
