Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "HUMISTON & / CUMMINGS / S. AMBOY. NJ", second quarter 19th century, ovoid jug with tapered spout, decorated with a brushed design of a tulip emanating from a leafy stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A thin 4" vertical crack at base on reverse, continuing a short distance onto underside. An approximately 1 1/4" in-the-firing line to base on reverse. A minor in-the-firing separation below lower handle terminal. A 1/2" in-the-firing iron ping to base on side of jug. A small amount of paint(?) residue to reverse. Handle with two minor chips and light wear. A tiny nick to reverse side of spout. Faintness to "S. AMBOY. NJ" portion of maker's mark.
