Very Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Bowl, Stamped "JOHN B PEWTRESS", Perth Amboy, NJ origin, circa 1840, round-walled bowl with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated on the front with two slip-trailed stems bearing strawberries. Further decorated above with fern-like slip-trailing. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Rare maker and form with strong decoration. Provenance: Ex-Georgeanna Greer Collection, Harmer Rooke Galleries, New York, NY; Ex-W. Oakley Raymond Collection, retaining his label on underside, which describes the piece as "Oyster Bowl / Peck Slip- N.Y. City / and / Greenpoint L.I." along with the catalog number "98". Literature: Illustrated in Greer, American Stonewares, p. 98, with caption stating, ". . . The form and bilateral horizontal lug handles suggest that it might be a serving bowl. . ." Very nice condition. A salt drip to rim on side of bowl, including a small salt drip/in-the-firing chip to handle below. A salt drip to side left side of bowl's front.
