Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt "1836" Date, Stamped "SAMUEL STOUT", South River, NJ, 1836, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with the brushed cobalt date "1836". The cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "SAMUEL STOUT", is impressed above with an inverted "L" in "SAMUEL". Light cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Excellent condition with a small chip to underside at edge, possibly in-the-firing.
