Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double-Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.S. TAFT & COMPANY / KEENE, NH", circa 1875, cylindrical crock with rounded shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two crossed birds with crests, perched in a tree branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This crock was decorated by an artist also employed for a period by the Nortons of Bennington, VT, as it features a double-bird design matching a signed "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT." crock offered in this auction. Taft's decorations were typically more simplistic than that found on this crock, making this example not only visually-appealing, but also exceptionally rare for a piece made at this pottery. Y-shaped crack under one handle, extending onto underside. Approximately 10 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. Small chips on interior of rim.
