Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Water Cooler, Stamped "SMITH & DAY / NORWALK", CT origin, circa 1840, ovoid, keg-form cooler with tooled banding and wheel-thrown and applied bunghole, featuring cobalt highlights to banding, maker's mark, and base of bunghole. Incised "3" on top surface. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced NC collection, purchased by the consignor decades ago. X-shaped crack on underside. continuing onto base, where it forms a T. An X-shaped crack to bottom half of cooler on reverse. A 1 1/8" loss to bunghole and a 3/4" smooth, glazed-over chip to bunghole.A few minor rim chips, one of which is glazed over. Two in-the-firing base chips and a few very minor base chips.
