Fine Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO. PA", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with James Hamilton maker's stenciling between stenciled flourishes, above a bold-faced stenciled "3", flanked fan-shaped stenciling. Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Crisp stenciling with excellent color. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. An approximately 4" crack on underside, extending onto base of reverse. Otherwise excellent condition.
