Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Pittsburgh, PA Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1885, semi-ovoid jug with tooled spout, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "J.J. SPECK & CO / DISTILLERS / AND / WHOLESALE / LIQUOR DEALERS. / 145 & 146 WATER ST. & / 188 & 190 FIRST AVE / PITTSBURGH. PA.". Shoulder and base with wavy and straight stripe decoration. Stenciled "2" with flourishes at base. Cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a small collection of Pittsburgh advertising stoneware consigned to this auction. A 7" line to reverse. Staining and minor crazing to reverse. A salt drip to shoulder. A small piece of salt or clay adhered to side of jug.
