Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Bold Cobalt Freehand Floral Decoration and "5" Flanked By Diagonal Stripes, Uniontown, PA origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, applied lug handles, and combed incising to midsection, decorated across the front with a large tulip emanating from a stem with graduated swags. Decorated below with a large freehand "5" flanked by an unusual crossed diagonal stripe design. Freehand stripe decoration below rim and at midsection. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent decoration, color, and size. Some light, scattered exfoliation to base area on jar's right side. Salt drips to underside. In-the-firing surface fissures on underside, not visible on interior.
