Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-in-Nest Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, stepped rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a bird with spotted wing seated in a wreath-like nest. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately forty years ago. Excellent condition with some staining and a minor nick to one handle.
