Scarce Two-Gallon Alexandria, VA Stoneware Advertising Jar, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-squared rim, featuring the elaborate stenciled advertising, "E.J. MILLER, SON & CO. / IMPORTERS & WHOLESALE / DEALERS IN / CHINA, GLASSWARE AND / HOUSE FURNISHING / GOODS / NO. 65 KING ST. / ALEXANDRIA. VA". Stenciled rising sun decoration to middle of stenciled inscription. Freehand stripes above and below. This example of E.J. Miller stoneware features a difficult-to-find stencil variant with a profuse stenciled inscription and rising sun motif. Freehand "2" flanked by flourish to right of stenciling. Excellent condition with some water glass staining and a minor nick to shoulder molding.
