Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.", circa 1840, thin-walled, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated with a sweeping floral motif extending from the side of the jar across its front. Brushed cobalt foliate designs on reverse and below handles. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Exceptional condition and elegant form. Literature: Illustrated in Ketchum, American Stoneware, p. 105. Excellent condition with a minor nick to the ends of one handle and a minor nick to opposite handle.
