Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Date and Initials "G.D. / 1887", Inscribed "G.W.P. / York / Pa", George W. Pfaltzgraff, York, PA, 1887, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with the brushed cobalt date "1887" above the initials "G.D". Underside incised "G.W.P. / York / Pa". the 1900 Federal Census lists George W. Pfaltzgraff as a "Manfr Stone Ware", living in York, PA. His birth date, listed as February 1871, indicates he was just sixteen or seventeen years old when he made this pot. Inscribed Pfaltzgraff pieces are considered exceptionally rare. Excellent condition with a minor chip on interior of rim and some staining.
