Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITE & WOOD, / BINGHAMTON, N.Y.", circa 1885, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird with paddle-shaped tail, perched on a flowering vine. Numerous spots of fry to cobalt. Chips to interior and exterior of rim, some of which are large. A 4" crack from rim. A 3 3/4" Y-shaped crack at base on front, continuing 2 3/4" onto underside. A 1 1/8" base chip on reverse. A small chip to one handle. Some staining. A 2 1/4" flake to underside at edge.
