Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, N.Y.", circa 1885, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large brushed and slip-trailed design of a paddletailed bird with unusual raised wings, perched on a flowering vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a long-term private collection. Poor restorations to areas of surface and underside, including some small restored areas to decoration and varnish over surface, including decoration. Restored rim chips and additional small, unrestored rim chips. Some unrestored exfoliation to reverse. A short in-the-firing line from rim on interior. H 13 1/2".
