Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-squared spout, decorated with a tulip plant bearing three large blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Very nice condition. A thin 7/8" surface flake and minor in-the-firing iron ping to reverse. Some staining. An in-the-firing contact mark and small iron ping to front. A minor spout chip. A small piece of adhered clay to handle. A very faint 2 5/8" line to shoulder, probably in-the-firing.
