Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "FENTON & HANCOCK / ST. JOHNSBURY VT", circa 1860, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed foliate design featuring stems with thick, scrolled ends. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes nicely-fitting, salt-glazed stoneware lid, possibly original to the jar. Wear around shallow chipping around inner rim where lid rests. Light exfoliation to underside. A small in-the-firing contact mark / chip to base on reverse. Lid in excellent, essentially as-made condition.
