Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1860, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a tree stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a long-term private collection. Oversalting to decoration. Two minor spout chips. A line on top surface of spout. A very tight line from base with some smaller, very tight lines emanating from it; a second tight line also emanating from base. A chipped area at base that appears to be in-the-making.
