Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "F LAUFERSWEILER / EMPIRE CITY POTTERY / 517 & 519 W 27. ST. NY", circa 1880, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a chicken with heavy feather detail, pecking kernels of corn from a stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Robert Meltzer Collection. Excellent condition with a minor nick to one handle and a small chip to front near base.
