Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "F LAUFERSWEILER / EMPIRE CITY POTTERY / 517 & 519 W 27. ST. NY", circa 1880, cylindrical jar with applied lug handles and flared rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Robert Meltzer Collection. A large, thin Y-shaped crack extending across underside, part of which extends 2" up front of jar.
