Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Manganese Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a series of brushed manganese daubs. Large manganese highlights to handle terminals. Excellent size. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. A large area of restoration under one handle, including a thin crack descending from it to base. A tight crack on underside, extending 4" up side of jar. Glazed-over iron ping to shoulder. Two small base chips and a 1 1/4" area of in-the-firing wear to base. A minor rim chip and tiny rim nick. Staining. H 8".
