One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Horse Decoration, Stamped "NORTH BAY", John C. Waelde, North Bay, NY, circa 1855, cylindrical jug with rounded spout, decorated with a stenciled cobalt design of a horse tied to a hitching post, applied with a sponge. Sponged ground below. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Provenance: Robert Meltzer Collection. In-the-firing contact marks to top of spout. A 1 1/2" hairline to upper handle terminal. A 2 1/2" iron ping to underside. Reverse with two in-the-firing burned spots and a small iron ping. H 11 1/2".
