Rare and Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Decoration of a Deer, Stamped "NORTH BAY," John C. Waelde, North Bay, NY, circa 1855, cylindrical jug with rounded spout, decorated with a stenciled design of a stag executed with heavy cobalt sponging, standing atop a stylized ground of lighter sponged cobalt. Brushed cobalt band across maker's mark. Desirable small-sized jug with an outstanding figural design and excellent color to the decoration and clay ground. Nick and semi-circular surface line in spout, not visible on interior. 1 1/8" chip to bottom edge on reverse, primarily visible when jug is turned over.
