Very Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Rooster Motif, Stamped "J.C. WAELDE / NORTH BAY", New York State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large sponged cobalt design of a standing rooster atop a stylized ground composed of a large sponged stripe. Rooster design is flanked by slip-trailed wavy line and spot decoration, along with a slip-trailed "2" underscored by dashes above. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. The rooster motif is one of the rarest stenciled designs found on John C. Waelde's distinctive North Bay, New York stoneware products. This jug is the first bearing this design that we have ever offered. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a 1 1/8" salt drip to side of jug.
