Exceedingly Rare and Important Four-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Cat Decoration, Stamped "WEBSTER & BERGEN / NORTH BAY", New York State origin, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a standing cat atop a stylized ground featuring inverted triangles and circles. Brushed cobalt number 4 to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Cat designs from any 19th century American stoneware pottery are considered highly unusual. This jar is believed to be one of a very few cat-decorated North Bay, NY pieces known. In-the-firing contact marks to base area. A small chip to exterior of rim and two minor in-the-firing nicks to interior of rim. A faint 9" diagonal line to base area on reverse. H 12 1/2".
