Fine Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Rose Designs, Stenciled "BAYLESS, McCARTHEY & CO. / LOUISVILLE, KY", Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, the front featuring a large stenciled rose design above the maker's stenciling, "BAYLESS, McCARTHEY & CO. / LOUISVILLE, KY". Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Base with stenciled bold-faced "2" flanked by roses. A fine example of Western PA stoneware made for the Kentucky market. A minor chip to bottom edge of rim on front. Two chips to bottom edge of rim on reverse. A chip on interior of rim. Two very minor, in-the-firing chips to bottom edge. A 1" surface line near base on side of jar, not visible on the interior and probably in-the-firing. Some light staining to side.
