Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Freehand Decoration, Stenciled "FOELL & ALT / EAST BIRMINGHAM. PA", circa 1860, semi-ovoid jar with flattened rim and tooling to shoulder and midsection, decorated with a freehand vine bearing graduated leaves below two stripes. Foell & Alt maker's stenciling above a bold-faced stenciled "2" at base. A large fork-shaped crack on reverse extending onto left side of jar's front, also continuing onto underside, where it forms a large T. A 4 3/4" crack from rim on front. An in-the-firing separation line on underside, not visible on interior. A 2 3/4" loss to base on side of jar. A minor base chip. Two chips on interior of rim.
