Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "E S FOX ATHENS", New York State origin, circa 1840, highly-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout decorated with a brushed design of a bird on stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and lower handle terminal. In-the-firing residue to side of jug and reverse. An in-the-firing contact mark to opposite side of jug. A 1 3/4" hairline to spout on reverse. Spider line on underside, continuing 3 1/2" up base of jug. A minor in-the-firing chip to handle.
