Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Cooler with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to William Nichols, Poughkeepsie, NY, circa 1823, highly-ovoid cooler with tooled shoulder, open handles, and circular bunghole, decorated with an abstract foliate design underscored by circular details. Cobalt highlights to upper handle terminals. Excellent form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A section of one handle reglued. A 1 3/8" spout chip. Several short, in-the-firing lines to base area and surrounding bunghole. H 15 3/4".
