Monumental Four-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin circa 1835, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a swag and tulip motif extending from handle to handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a brush stroke of cobalt underneath each handle. Impressed "4" under one handle. This cake crock is the largest example produced in Baltimore that we are aware of. Crock is out-of-round with an in-the-firing separation crack visible on the interior only. Several surface lines extending upward from base area, not visible on interior. A 2 1/2" vertical hairline at base, continuing 1 1/2" onto underside. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing flake to underside at edge. Other small, in-the-firing base chips. A small rim chip. A salt glob to underside. A 1 1/4" ping to interior, not visible on exterior. H 8 1/2" ; Diameter 15 3/8".
