One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA.", circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the front with two large tulips flanking a wreath-decorated spout. Reverse with a third tulip design. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, ears, and handle terminals. A nicely-decorated example of a prized Cowden & Wilcox form. Chips to spout. Some fry to areas of cobalt. A small rim chip and minor rim nick. Three shallow chips to raised molding below rim. A minuscule post-firing and small, glazed-over nick to handle at base on reverse. H 9 1/2".
