Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large brushed design of a cluster of grapes hanging from a leafy vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A difficult-to-find example of Frederick Cowden freehand-decorated stoneware, and one of the finest examples bearing his mark we we have ever offered. Provenance: David Musser Collection. Excellent condition with a spout chip.
