One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout and wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the front with two spitting tulips, one with leafy stem, the other with unusual bow around stem. Cobalt highlights around base of spout, surrounding ears, and accenting the maker's mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a New Jersey collection amassed decades ago. Excellent condition with a small spout chip and a short, minor in-the-firing surface line to handle on reverse. H 8 1/2".
