Scarce One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "LEWIS & GARDINER / HUNTINGTON, L.I.", New York State origin, circa 1827-1829, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with three wavy vertical cobalt stripes on reverse. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A difficult-to-find Long Island maker's mark, particularly on decorated pieces. A 5 1/2" vertical crack on front, which continues downward and forms a series of faint lines on underside. Chips to interior of rim. A small U-shaped crack to rim on reverse.
