Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT", circa 1855, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump. Restored area to front surrounding pheasant's face. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Two short in-the-firing separations to rim on reverse. A small iron ping near base. A minor chip and wear to inner rim where a lid would rest. A shallow, in-the-firing chipped area to base.
