Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flower basket, depicted with open handles and cross-hatched body, brimming with leaves, dotted trails, and a large central flower. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A chip to end of right handle. Several shallow chips to interior of rim and inner rim for lid. A very faint surface line on right side of jar. A second short, faint surface line at front terminal of right handle. Some abrasions to cobalt.
