Rare and Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Flowering Compote Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pedestal-based compote brimming with a large flower, leaves, and dotted trails. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable small size to jug, strong decoration, and excellent color. Excellent condition with a minor nick on interior of spout and a large stone embedded in underside.
