Four-Gallon Wheeling, WV Stoneware Advertising Jar, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising "JOHN WELTY. / GROCER. / NO. 202, / MARKET SQ. / EAST SIDE.". Freehand vining and stripes to shoulder. Base with freehand number 4 flanked by dashes, underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Wear to cobalt. Three vertical lines at base on reverse, extending a short distance onto underside. A tiny chip to one handle.
