Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt 1858 Date Within a Wreath, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT.", 1858, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a wreath with spotted berries at the tip of each bough, the interior featuring the date "1858" with flourish below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Dated examples of Norton family stoneware are considered rare. Large area of restoration to reverse, left side, and interior. This restoration includes paint to the left handle, although the extent of its restoration is unknown.
