Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT", circa 1855, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall collar with semi-rounded rim, decorated on the front with a large slip-trailed design of a flowering plant. Exceptional detail throughout, including spotted accents to the leaves, heavy shading to the interior of the flower petals, and slip-trailed dashes bordering the blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Large sealed Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse. A sealed crack across underside, extending up left side of churn and touching one end of left handle. A minor chip on interior of rim.
