Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Ship Chandler's Jar, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1870, squat-shaped jar with flared rim and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large brushed leaf motif. Impressed on the front with the advertising, "BULLOCK & MORTON, / SHIP CHANDLERS / & GROCERS / BALTIMORE". Cobalt highlights to advertising and handles. Includes a salt-glazed stoneware lid, possibly original to the jar. A highly-unusual Baltimore stoneware form with appealing "SHIP CHANDLERS" advertising. Very nice overall condition. A few smooth and fairly unobtrusive, in-the-firing contact marks to surface. A tiny nick to one handle. A glazed-over rim chip on front and small iron ping to rim on reverse. Some shallow chipping to inner rim where the lid rests. Significant chips to lid.
