Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Butterfly Decoration, Stamped "HAXSTUN, OTTMAN & CO. / FORT EDWARD N.Y.", circa 1875, semi-ovoid churn with tall collar, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a spotted butterfly within a wreath. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Butterfly decorations by this maker are highly unusual. Significant restoration to surface, including restoration to bottom half of wreath, areas surrounding wreath, reverse, and sides. An iron ping to rim. Shallow chipping to inner rim, where a lid would rest.
